Western Australian Student Number (WASN) requests for 2018
With a large number of students now registered with a Western Australian Student Number (WASN), it is imperative that this number remains with the student throughout their school life. Schools need to recognise the importance of the WASN to avoid duplication of records and maintain continuity of student data.
From Term 4 2017, batches of WA Student Numbers can only be requested through SIRS for students entering Kindergarten in 2018.
Schools where most students already have a WASN and new students have enrolled who require a number, please check first using the ‘Search for WASN’ process – explained in ‘How to Search for WA Student Numbers in SIRS’ in the Circular July 2017. If you cannot locate a number, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and give details of the student’s legal surname, legal first name, date of birth and academic year. It is also useful to include your school code in any correspondence.
All secondary schools will be required to send a complete list of Year 7 students entering their school, including the student’s legal surname, legal first name and date of birth. Numbers will be sent back where allocated to students and new numbers requested for those without.
If your school is registering all of your students for the first time, please send a spreadsheet of the student information to email@example.com, and include legal surname, legal first name and date of birth. We will then check to see if any of the students have a WASN already and advise you of this number, and if not, we will issue batches of numbers which you can import into your database/system prior to uploading the SRGDG to SIRS.

Update to extension for completing the online Student Declaration and Permission submission

Thank you to schools whose students have submitted the online Student Declaration and Permission at https://www.wace.wa.edu.au.
There are still many students who have not completed the process. This is the last opportunity for your students to complete the online Student Declaration and Permission and these must be completed by Wednesday, 20 September 2017.
Students can access the submission page at https://www.wace.wa.edu.au.

The following students are required to complete the online Student Declaration and Permission:
- All Year 12 students
- Year 11 students who are studying ATAR Units 3 and 4 and sitting the 2016 ATAR course examinations
- Year 10 students who have been given approval to study ATAR Units 3 and 4 and sit the 2017 ATAR course examinations.
Failure to complete the submission process may impact schools with students who:
- may win an award (including students who are not sitting ATAR course examinations) and who have not indicated their preference to have/not have their name published in the media
- are unaware of the requirements for achieving the WACE.
Schools are requested to ensure all students complete the submission process by the extended deadline of Wednesday, 20 September 2017.
Schools can monitor which students have completed the online Student Declaration and Permission via the report CSE058 – Student Release Choices by Provider. The pathway to the report is: Reports > Other reports > Report type: Students, Report: CSE058.

- try Forgotten Password function (only works with your first 10 tries); or
- email firstname.lastname@example.org (monitored from Monday to Friday between 8.00am to 5.00pm)

2018 Externally Set Task (EST) content for all Year 12 General and Foundation courses

The Externally Set Task (EST) is administered in schools during Weeks 2, 3 and 4 of Term 2, 2018. All students enrolled in a General Year 12 or Foundation Year 12 course are required to complete the EST for that course. The EST is based on Unit 3 syllabus content and schools are advised that the syllabus content, highlighted within the document, is now available in the Assessment section of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority Years 11 and 12 website at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/assessment/externally-set-tasks/externally-set-task-materials.
The Authority will publish the Externally Set Tasks Handbook 2018 in January 2018.
Opportunity to join examining panels for the 2018 ATAR course examinations
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority invites applications from current and retired teachers and TAFE and University Lecturers to participate in the development of the 2018 ATAR course examinations.
Positions that may be available for all examining panels are:
- Chief examiner
- Independent Reviewer
- Paper Checker.
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority is seeking applicants with at least five years’ experience in teaching and assessment, an excellent understanding of examination-setting techniques and familiarity with the syllabus to be examined in 2018 in the relevant course.
The Authority may offer a panel position different from those selected on the original application form.
At the point of applying all applicants must have a current screening clearance number obtained by gaining a National History Check through Crimtrack.

Applications must be received no later than 5pm on Friday, 20 October 2017. Appointment to positions will be finalised by Friday, 17 November 2017.

VET Brochures Online
A series of VET brochures have been developed by the School Curriculum and Standards to provide schools with additional resources in order for students to make informed decisions about including VET as part of their secondary study options.
The VET and the WACE brochure is a great resource if students have questions about how VET can contribute towards the WACE and the VET Awards for Outstanding Achievement brochure can be promoted to students who are undertaking VET and workplace learning in Year 12 in addition to exhibiting excellence in their chosen field.
Additionally, schools may wish to refer to the Training Pathways brochure to assist with providing career advice to students on the post-secondary opportunities available through undertaking VET.

NEW SIRS report – Year 12 Student VET Achievement Detailed Summary

A new report is available in SIRS under Reports > Other Reports > Achievements > CSE215 – Year 12 Student VET Achievement Detailed Summary.
The CSE215 report has been developed in order to assist schools in their overall planning where VET is a significant component of WACE achievement for students. This report will allow schools to track all VET qualification completions* for the previous cohort of Y12 students who were currently enrolled at the school at the time of completing Year 12.
Please note: Any student with a left status or who was enrolled at your school in Year 11 but transferred to another school in Year 12 will not be included in this report.
Each record of the report will include currently enrolled Year 12 students (for the previous calendar year) who completed a Certificate II or higher or partial Certificate III or higher** in addition will include the:
- Calendar year the qualification was completed and the school in which the qualification was completed at
- AQF completed type (Cert II, Cert III or higher, Partial Cert III)
- Qualification code and name
- RTO code and name
- Student WACE eligibility***
- Four or more ATAR.
The CSE215 report for the 2016 Year 12 cohort is currently available. The 2017 Year 12 cohort will be available early in 2018.
* The CSE215 report includes only successfully completed Certificate II or higher qualifications and **partially completed Certificate III or higher qualifications (of at least 220 nominal hours of new VET enrolments in Year 12).
*** Student WACE eligibility is based on the student’s ability to achieve WACE given their current WACE study options.
