It is important for schools to inform students about the 2026 ATAR course written and practical examination rules on anonymity and dress codes.

This is the second Circular item in the series of general examination information provided by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) to support schools in building students’ understanding of processes and key dates for the 2026 ATAR course examinations.

The Authority has established rules for anonymity and dress codes for practical and written examinations.

Maintaining anonymity is essential in ensuring that all examinations are conducted and all candidates are assessed fairly, and that no candidates are unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged. Failure to maintain the anonymity requirement will be reported to the Breach of Examination Rules Committee.

Anonymity

Practical examinations – performance examinations
All candidates must ensure that nothing they carry or wear can identify them as an individual, any school, club or achievements. Uniforms or other items of clothing, equipment or stamped/labelled material that may be identified with a school or team are not permitted in the examination.

Practical examinations – portfolio/production submissions
Any portfolio/production submission must be identified only by a candidate’s Western Australian Student Number (WASN).

Any other information, such as a candidate’s name, the name of any school or previous marks from a school, must be removed from all individual pieces submitted. Submissions must not contain any offensive slogans, symbols or images.

Written examinations
Written examination papers are identified by a candidate’s WASN only. It is important that it is written in the space provided on each of the examination Question/Answer booklets.

Any other information, such as a candidate’s name or the name of any school, must not be written on the examination paper/s.

Dress codes

For both practical and written examinations, no clothing or items with offensive slogans, symbols or images are permitted and all caps or hats must be removed before entering the examination venue.

Veils or headwear, worn for cultural, medical or religious reasons as part of usual attire when attending school, can be worn during an examination.

Dress codes for written examinations are as prescribed by the school or examination centre. It is important that candidates are familiar with this information prior to arriving at the designated examination centre or school.
