2025 ATAR course examinations – marker applications

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is seeking applications from qualified people interested in marking the ATAR course practical and/or written examinations.

Depending on the ATAR course examination timeline, markers may need to be available during school holidays, Term 4 school days, Saturdays and/or Sundays, public holidays and/or in the evening. If teaching in a school during the marking period, permission must be obtained from the Principal to undertake the marking role.

Eligibility of employment

Markers residing overseas must supply the relevant visa.

You are not eligible to be a marker if you have taken a voluntary redundancy from a government agency in the past 12 months.

Code of Conduct

Markers must declare any other employment or financial or material conflict of interest; for example, production of textbooks and/or course resources, delivering seminars/lectures and/or marking an ATAR course examination for the purpose of revision for current Year 12 examination candidates.

Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)

It is a requirement that all Department of Education employees must be cleared through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and allocated a valid Screening Clearance Number (SCN) prior to commencement. A NCCHC is only valid when issued through the Department’s Screening Unit.

Markers will be informed of their SCN status at appointment. If the SCN is not current, information will be supplied about how to complete a new NCCHC.

Working with Children Check (WWCC): Practical – oral and performance examinations

Department of Education employees undertaking child-related employment must hold a valid Working with Children Check, as required by the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004. Employees who do not currently hold a valid WWC will be required to obtain one prior to commencement.

Role and duties of markers

Prior to completing the application, it is important that the document, Role and duties of the Marker is read and understood.

Application

Applications must be submitted no later than 5.00 pm on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

Note: You will be required to upload a one-page (single-sided) resumé highlighting your skills and experience relevant to this position as part of the application. The upload must be in PDF format (maximum file size 4 MB).

Marker selection

Markers are selected based on criteria, including experience in teaching the course being examined or a similar course, qualifications, previous marking experience, representation from different education systems and various schools and course enrolment numbers.

Only in exceptional circumstances will markers be selected to mark more than one ATAR course examination.

Submission of an application does not guarantee appointment.

All ATAR course written examination markers and most ATAR course practical examination markers need to have access to a computer and recent internet browser.

Important dates and information

The ATAR course practical examinations commence on Saturday, 27 September 2025 and will conclude on Sunday, 26 October 2025. The ATAR course written examinations will commence on Wednesday, 29 October 2025 and will conclude on Thursday, 20 November 2025.

ATAR course practical examination markers will be notified of the outcome of the application by mid-July 2025 and ATAR course written examination markers will be notified by Friday, 12 September 2025.

Online marking will be introduced for the following ATAR course written examinations:

  • French: Second Language
  • Japanese: Second Language
  • Music.
