Sample Teaching and Learning Outlines
Teaching and Learning Outlines are now available in Science, HASS, Health and Physical Education and for Kindergarten. The sample teaching and learning outlines exemplify the elements of a teaching and learning program. When developing a program for your students consider the following:
- timing and sequencing of the year level syllabus content
- range of learning experiences through which students can apply the knowledge, skills and concepts from the syllabus content
- selection of resources to support teaching and learning experiences
- implementation of the principles of teaching and learning as articulated in the ‘Ways of teaching’ in the Overview of the syllabus.

Reading Aloud samples
Early Childhood (P–2) Reading Aloud samples show students completing reading assessments. The videos highlight the importance of assessment beyond students’ ability to decode text by addressing aspects of the achievement standard in relation to students’ ability to interpret and respond to a range of texts and text types. They reflect age-appropriate learning and curriculum content relevant to the specific year level.
The samples have been developed with classroom teachers from a range of schools in Western Australia.
A reminder
Grades should be allocated based on a suite of work. The samples are carefully annotated to exemplify the observable qualities that are indicative of the allocated grade.

Assessment Activities
The new additions include: Science (Years 4 and 6), Mathematics (Years 1–6) and Health and Physical Education (Year 2, 3, 5 and 6). Sample marking keys are provided with many of the tasks. These keys vary in their format according to the years of schooling and the assessment strategy. A marking key should be developed by teachers at the same time as the assessment activity is being developed. The suggested, but not compulsory, summative marking keys are detailed and can be used at the end of a teaching cycle to provide additional evidence for reporting purposes. The marking keys:
- support a consistent interpretation of the criteria that guide the teacher's judgement
- provide the basis for feedback to students
- enable the fair and valid ranking of student achievement.
The assessment activity and marking key formats are not prescriptive.

Kindergarten
A five week sample program focusing on an inquiry question to investigate a ‘big idea’ allows children and educators to pursue knowledge and increase understanding across the learning and development areas. This dynamic and play-based program allows children to transfer concepts and develop a deeper understanding in a range of perspectives with the educator not only leading learning but researching alongside the children. At the end of the document you will locate a Play Opportunity Web (POW) that incorporates a range of different ideas to suit different learning styles.
