Success stories
Maya’s creative journey
Ever since she was young, Maya enjoyed making things and being creative. She was able to extend her practical art skills in Year 11 by completing a Certificate II in Visual Arts. She loved learning how to work with a variety of materials and enjoyed being able to try a range of processes and techniques. Through the Certificate II in Visual Arts, Maya discovered that she particularly liked working with textiles and now wants to build a career as a textile artist.
Maya is completing workplace learning (ADWPL) at the Aboriginal Art Centre in her community where she is learning about both the cultural and business aspects of the Centre. Maya’s VET Coordinator recognised Maya’s commitment to being part of the creative industries and selected her to be nominated for the VET Awards. The Art Centre Manager who is Maya’s ADWPL supervisor was also impressed with Maya’s dedication and wrote a supportive reference for her, explaining how she had demonstrated her skills while working in the Centre. After completing her Certificate II in Visual Arts, Maya decided to enrol in a Certificate III in Visual Arts to enhance her understanding in the Visual Arts field and arranged with the Art Centre Manager to continue ADWPL during Year 12.
Following the shortlisting and interview process, Maya was awarded the VET Exhibition as the top student in the Creative Industries. Being part of the VET awards process affirmed Maya’s goal to be a textile artist and her work at the Aboriginal Art Centre gave her an understanding of how to present and sell creative products. She plans to start her own textile art business with the support of the small business advisors in her region when she finishes school.
Leo’s first job
Leo has always loved being outdoors and enjoyed mountain biking with his friends on the weekends. After discussing future career opportunities with his school’s career advisor, Leo decided that he was interested in turning his passion into a career and started a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation in Year 11.
Leo is doing his workplace learning (ADWPL) with a bike shop that provides services to mountain bike races. He really enjoys learning about repairing bikes and helping riders to do their best times. Being involved on the racing side of mountain biking got Leo interested in racing himself. He now trains with a local mountain biking club and is developing his own racing skills. One of the club members told him about the VET Awards and he approached the VET Coordinator at his school to learn more about the process.
The school’s VET Coordinator supported Leo’s nomination and his supervisor at the bike shop wrote him a strong recommendation letter. Leo was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the industry area of Sport, Recreation and Public Safety in the VET Awards. He succeeded in getting a part-time job with a sports retail chain and credits his VET learning experience with giving him the confidence to put himself forward and do the interview.
Leo decided to continue this vocational pathway and enrol in a Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership in Year 12 and will complete the ADWPL hours while at his new part-time job. When he finishes school, he plans to become a Bike Mechanic Support for Cycle Tours where he will be able to provide bike servicing on-the-go and utilise his outdoor safety skills to ensure cyclists get their best times.
