Schools are advised to check the total nominal hours of the units of competency students will be undertaking towards achievement of their Certificate II qualification. This will ensure that it meets the minimum 220 nominal hour requirement to be allocated full unit equivalence towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Depending on the selection of elective units of competency, common qualifications may require low total nominal hours include SIS20319 Certificate II in Sport Coaching and FSK20119 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways. The nominal hours for units of competency can be accessed from the Department of Training and Workforce Development via the training product search: https://www.dtwd.wa.gov.au/training-product-search opens in new window.

Further information about the allocation of unit equivalence for VET qualifications can be found on page 67 of the 2022 WACE Manual https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/further-resources/wace-manual.

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) recommends that School Leaders and people delivering VET to secondary school students read the Awards Selection Report now available on the Authority website at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/certification/exhibitions-and-awards under Awards for outstanding achievement in VET.

The report provides valuable information for teachers who supported the nomination of students in 2021 and for those who plan to do so in 2022.

It presents statistics on the number of students involved in the awards selection process and detailed information on how students were selected for awards, including feedback and recommendations for teachers.

The 2022 VET Awards for Outstanding Achievement Brochure and 2022 VET Awards Nomination Kit will be available on the website in April under Awards for outstanding achievement in VET.

Access to the online nomination process will be available to schools in Term 3. The last date for schools to submit VET award nominations via SIRS is Monday, 29 August 2022 at 4.30 pm.

2022 VET ESQUAL – important information

Sandra Thompson (08) 9273 6750

The Vocational Education and Training (VET) Qualification Estimate (ESQUAL) is a mandatory Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) reporting activity required by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) to be completed by 5 May 2022.

Schools are required to report the qualifications being undertaken by students (including students who access training offsite at external providers) and the student details for each qualification.

Details of the units of competence within each qualification are not required to be reported. Schools are only required to update the ESQUAL file after the 5 May deadline if there is a significant change in VET offerings.

Schools will also need to indicate the delivery arrangement (for example, auspice, profile, fee for service) for each VET qualification.

For more information about the reporting process, the full list of delivery arrangement definitions and the ESQUAL file format, refer to the Section 3.3 of the Data Procedures Manual 2022. The manual can be downloaded from the Authority website at: https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/data-procedures-manual

Important information

Uploading an ESQUAL file to Student Information and Record System (SIRS) causes the previous file to be completely erased. To correctly update the information in your ESQUAL upload file, all students should be included in each upload. This ensures that information on your school record in SIRS is maintained correctly.

Final dates for Year 12 students to withdraw from courses, 2022

Contact
Jenny Offer
(08) 9273 6313
Jenny.Offer@scsa.wa.edu.au

Schools are reminded of the final dates to withdraw Year 12 students from courses:

  • Thursday, 21 July 2022 – final date for withdrawing students from ATAR courses with practical examination components. No changes will be made to student enrolments in these courses after this date.
  • Monday, 8 August 2022 – final date for withdrawing students from ATAR courses which do not have practical examination components. No changes will be made to student enrolments in these courses after this date.
  • Monday, 8 August 2022 – final date for withdrawing students from General, Foundation, Preliminary and Vocational Education and Training (VET) industry specific courses. No changes will be made to student enrolments in these courses after this date.

As withdrawing from a course is a significant decision, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) strongly encourages students and their schools to use the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) checker to test the possible impact of their decision. The WACE checker is available on the Authority website at https://wacechecker2021.scsa.wa.edu.au/.

Schools are reminded that students who are enrolled in a Year 12 ATAR course must sit the external examination in that course. For ATAR courses with practical components, students must sit both the written and practical examinations. Students who do not sit an ATAR course examination and do not have an approved sickness/misadventure application for that course, will not have the grades for the pair of units completed in that year contribute to the calculation of the WACE.

As a consequence, a student may not meet the requirements to receive a WACE.
