Recognition of prior studies for students arriving from overseas and interstate

Schools are reminded that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority does not provide a service to determine the year group into which a student should be placed when arriving from overseas.

Schools are required to determine the most appropriate academic year to enrol a new student, based on information and academic records provided by the student/parents.

If a school considers that a student has completed the equivalent of Year 11 studies overseas or interstate, a Year 11 equivalent studies for a WACE form should be completed.  This can be found on our website via https://scsa.wa.edu.au/forms/forms under WACE Equivalence.

The equivalence service that the Authority provides is for overseas students that have completed their schooling overseas and looking to get their qualifications equated to a year level here in Western Australia, not for students that are part way through their schooling and seeking enrolment in to the school system in Western Australia.

Collection of Year 12 students’ achievement data – 2019

This is an early reminder that the Year 12 achievement data is due to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority by Thursday, 31 October 2019 as per the 2019 Activities Schedule.

Information about collecting achievement data will be received by schools by

Monday, 8 October 2019.

Schools will need to provide the achievement data for:

• Year 12 students for courses (ATAR, General, Foundation, Preliminary and VET industry specific), VET qualifications, VET units of competency and endorsed programs
• non-Year 12 students sitting one or more ATAR course examinations

Syllabus Review Process

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) monitors the implementation of Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) courses through gathering a range of information. As a result, the Authority may identify the need for necessary changes to aspects of courses and syllabuses.

In 2019, the Authority is reviewing the following courses:

• Year 11 and 12 Integrated Science (General)
• Year 11 and 12 Animal Production Systems (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Plant Production Systems (ATAR)
• Year 12 Physical Education Studies (ATAR)
• Year 12 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Media Production and Analysis (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Geography (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Drama (ATAR).

The Board has received feedback on these syllabuses from the relevant Curriculum Advisory Committees (CACs).

As a result of information received to date from the CACs, the Authority invites stakeholders to provide further feedback, as part of the review process, on the following syllabuses:

• Year 11 and 12 Integrated Science (General)
• Year 11 and 12 Animal Production Systems (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Plant Production Systems (ATAR)
• Year 12 Physical Education Studies (ATAR)
• Year 12 English as an Additional Language/Dialect (ATAR).

The feedback received will be used by the Board to inform further actions in relation to the review of these syllabuses.

For the following syllabuses, the Authority has asked the relevant CAC to progress the work of drafting revisions to the syllabuses for the Board’s consideration:

• Year 11 and 12 Media Production and Analysis (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Geography (ATAR)
• Year 11 and 12 Drama (ATAR).

The Board will be seeking feedback from stakeholders on the draft of these revised syllabuses once this work has been completed by the CACs.  Further information will be provided later this year via the Authority’s 11to12circular.
