The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) will be commencing the development of the Judging Standards Materials in Term 3 for Years 7 and 8 Languages (7–10 sequence).

The development of the Judging Standards Materials includes the Assessment Pointers, Achievement Standard and Annotated Work Samples for each year, and for each of the following Languages: Chinese: Second Language, French: Second Language, German: Second Language, Indonesian: Second Language, Italian: Second Language and Japanese: Second Language.

The Year 4 Moderation Workshops for Languages will be held in Weeks 8 and 9 in Term 3 for teachers who have participated in the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s (the Authority) pilot moderation process in 2021.

The moderation workshops are only available for teachers in schools who:

  • registered in Term 1 to participate in the Year 4 Languages moderation pilot in 2021 for Chinese: Second Language, French: Second Language, German: Second Language, Indonesian: Second Language, Italian: Second Language and Japanese: Second Language
  • have implemented the relevant languages assessment task developed by the Authority in late Term 2 or in the first half of Term 3.

Each workshop will focus on developing a comprehensive and shared understanding of the Achievement Standards for Year 4. Participants will gain an understanding of the benefits and use of marking keys as diagnostic tools and in making valid, reliable and consistent judgements on student achievement. The analysis of the standards, along with engagement with the assessment pointers, will support teachers in collecting evidence in order to make judgements for reporting purposes.

Teachers who are participating in the moderation process this year will receive an email inviting them to register for one of the languages moderation workshops.

School leaders and teachers are reminded that the Abilities Based Learning Education, Western Australia (ABLEWA) assessment and reporting tools are being moved to a new platform called Ruby.

The current ABLEWA platform has now closed and you are unable to enter new assessment data. We anticipate that by week 3 of this term the new platform will be available for use. Meanwhile you are able to view your previous assessments and reports in the old ABLEWA platform.

All historic data from ABLEWA will be migrated over to the new platform. Once the new platform is live you will be able to access all assessment information for your students.

Support materials to assist teachers in using the new platform are now available at https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/resources/ablewa/getting-started-with-ablewa including the new link to the ABLES Assessment Tool – https://ablewa.arcassess.education/ opens in new window.

Schools are advised that new curriculum support materials for Years 3 to 10 have been published, and will continue to be progressively published in Semester 2, to assist teachers to implement the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline.

The resources are accessible on the new Year Level (Pre-primary to Year 6) and Learning Areas (Years 7 to 10) pages of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) website by clicking the buttons on the K–10 homepage at https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au and then following the link to the Curriculum Support materials as shown below.

Access to the curriculum support materials require teachers to login or register for an Extranet account at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/extranet/login.

More materials are in development and will be available online, highlighted by a ‘new’ tag, as these are completed. These include early childhood materials (Kindergarten to Year 2), Years 3 to 10 teaching and learning sequences and assessment exemplars for each learning area.

The materials provide examples of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment using the Western Australian Curriculum and Achievement Standards and are reflective of the Principles of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.

It is the classroom teacher who is best placed to consider and respond to (accommodate) the diversity of their students. Reflecting on the learning experiences offered in the curriculum support materials will enable teachers to make appropriate adjustments (where applicable) to better cater for their students.

Schools and teachers will also be advised, via the Circular, as new materials are progressively published on the Authority website.
