The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is offering online briefings to support teachers in planning for multi‑age group classes.

The purpose of the briefings is to:

• explore the Authority‑developed planning approach to multi‑age group classes
• introduce the planning resources available for multi-age groups
• offer practical guidance on implementing the Authority‑developed approach in classrooms.

Years 3–6 professional learning module

The Authority has developed a new online professional learning module to support teachers with planning for multi-age group classes for Years 3–6.

The module explains the approach to planning for teaching and assessing across multiple year levels specifically for these years using the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline.

A professional learning module for Kindergarten to Year 2 will be made available during Term 4, 2026.

Australian Curriculum for Pre-primary to Year 10 Languages – Familiarisation briefing

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is offering an online briefing to support schools and teachers using the Australian Curriculum Languages for their Pre‑Primary to Year 10 Languages students.

The Australian Curriculum Languages provided by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) are:

• Aboriginal Languages and Torres Strait Islander Languages Framework
• Arabic
• Auslan
• Chinese
• Classical Greek
• Classical Languages Framework
• Latin
• Modern Greek
• Spanish
• Turkish
• Vietnamese

All Australian Curriculum Languages are available on the K–10 page of the Authority website at https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/teaching/curriculum-browser/languages.

The purpose of this briefing is to familiarise teachers with the relationship between the Australian Curriculum Languages and the revised Western Australian curriculum: Languages. It will cover:

• the key similarities and differences between the curriculum structures
• the implications for planning, teaching and assessing
• practical approaches for implementing the Australian Curriculum while meeting Western Australian curriculum and reporting requirements.

The briefing will be held on Thursday, 22 October 2026 from 3.30–4.30 pm. It is not compulsory and is free to attend.

Auslan

Pre-primary to Year 10 Languages curriculum – Familiarisation seminars

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) is offering online learning seminars during Term 4 to support schools with familiarisation with the Western Australian curriculum for Pre‑primary to Year 10 Languages.

These seminars will be an opportunity for teachers and curriculum leaders to gain a deeper understanding of specific aspects of the revised curriculum.

The focus areas for each session have been chosen from teacher feedback in the curriculum familiarisation workshops earlier in the year.

The Western Australian curriculum, as published in the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline available at https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au, is the mandated curriculum for Western Australian schools and must continue to be implemented in all schools until advised otherwise. Schools will be required to teach the revised year level curriculum for Languages in 2027.

Year 5 Humanities and Social Sciences: ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling’ teacher support resources – In-person and online workshops

In Term 4, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) will deliver professional learning workshops to support teachers to use the Year 5 teaching and learning exemplar, ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling’.

These workshops provide a valuable opportunity for teachers to engage with ‘The Pinjarra Massacre: Truth-telling. An apology on October 28, 2025 to the Bindjareb Noongar people by His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM Governor of Western Australia’.

Workshops will be available in metropolitan and regional locations, with both in-person and online options.

There is no cost to attend; however, places are limited and registration is essential.

Western Australian student number requests for 2027

All current students in Western Australia should be registered with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) and should have an allocated Western Australian student number (WASN).

This number remains with the student throughout their life. Schools need to recognise the importance of the WASN to avoid duplicate records and maintain continuity of student data.

Kindergarten students

From Monday 19 October 2026, schools will only be able to request WASNs through the Student Information Record System (SIRS) for Kindergarten students commencing in 2027.

Note: the Authority does not issue numbers for pre-Kindergarten students.

Pre‑primary onwards

For students other than Kindergarten who transfer from another WA school, check whether they already have a WASN before requesting a new number.

Instructions on how to search for a WASN are available in Section 4.3 of the Data Procedures Manual 2026 available at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/data-procedures-manual.

For new students commencing in 2027 who do not have a WASN, schools should request a new number beginning in January 2027.

Troubleshooting

If the search details do not match the information in SIRS, such as a different date of birth or spelling variation, no record will be found.

If a number cannot be located, email numbers@scsa.wa.edu.au with the student’s legal family name, legal given name, date of birth and academic year, and your school code.

If a school requests a WASN for a student who already has one, the correct WASN will be provided.
