Consultation – Proposed changes to Pre-primary to Year 10 Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum

The Pre-primary to Year 10 Humanities and Social Sciences learning area is currently being reviewed to adopt and adapt the Australian Curriculum version 9 within the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. Proposed revisions to the curriculum for the Humanities and Social Sciences will be available from Monday, 22 July 2024.
Teachers and other stakeholders are invited to register for an online consultation information session to learn about the proposed revisions and the rationale for the construct and content included in the consultation drafts.

Teachers and other stakeholders are invited to review the revised curriculum on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (the Authority) website from Monday, 22 July to Friday, 16 August 2024 and are encouraged to complete the Authority’s consultation survey to provide feedback on the revised curriculum for Humanities and Social Sciences. The survey will be available with the consultation materials.
Feedback may also be submitted directly to the Authority at WACAO@scsa.wa.edu.au.
The Authority is aiming to have the revised curriculum for Humanities and Social Sciences approved for familiarisation in 2025 and implementation in 2026.
For 2024, teachers are reminded that the current Humanities and Social Sciences Western Australian Curriculum is the mandated curriculum for Western Australia in 2024 and in 2025.

The Pre-primary to Year 10 Humanities and Social Sciences learning area is currently being reviewed to adopt and adapt the Australian Curriculum version 9 within the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. Proposed revisions to the curriculum for the Humanities and Social Sciences will be available from Monday, 22 July 2024.
To assist teachers and stakeholders to review the proposed curriculum, consultation workshops will be held for the proposed Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum for Years 7–10 in the metropolitan and regional areas. The workshops will familiarise stakeholders with the proposed curriculum content for Years 7–10 Humanities and Social Sciences and provide participants with an understanding of changes to the learning area content to assist them in completing the School Curriculum and Standards Authority's (the Authority) consultation survey.
The metropolitan workshops are designed for Heads of Learning Area or representative. Schools may send only one representative to one of these workshops.
The regional workshops will be held in Albany, Busselton and Geraldton. The workshops will allow participants to discuss the proposed changes and complete the consultation feedback survey.

The workshops are free to attend, but schools are responsible for teacher relief and any travel expenses.

Schools are advised that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority is offering Pre-primary to Year 6 English curriculum face-to-face and Webex workshops to support schools in their 2025 implementation of the revised English curriculum.
Full day metropolitan and country workshops, and half day Webex workshops will be provided at the end of Term 3 and the beginning of Term 4, 2024. The workshops will provide attendees with an understanding of the revisions to the English Pre-primary to Year 10 curriculum content and include support materials to assist with planning, teaching and assessing the revised curriculum.

Professional Learning: Planning and assessing with the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines – Albany, Bencubbin, Kalgoorlie and Perth

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority invites school leaders and early childhood teachers to participate in a workshop to support their planning and assessment with the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (the Guidelines). Teachers will be supported to develop planning documents that reflect and complement their specific context. The full day session will also explore monitoring and assessment practices. School leaders are encouraged to attend with teachers from their school.
The full day session will include:
- an overview of the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines, including the Vision, Principles and Practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (the EYLF)
- a reflection on your context and practice using the Guidelines
- collaboration and discussion with colleagues
- time to develop your own documents for planning your program
- time to develop your own documents for planning your learning environment
- review of the EYLF Principle: Assessment and evaluation for learning, development and wellbeing.
Participants should bring their printed or digital copy of the Guidelines and a device to take photos (such as your phone or iPad).
The workshop is not compulsory and is free to attend.
Please note: This event is not catered. Participants will need to bring their own water bottle, morning tea and lunch.

Extranet password strengthening

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority is in the process of strengthening Extranet passwords.
New Extranet accounts will require passwords to be a minimum of 8 characters using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, at least one number and one punctuation character.
From now until the end of the year, existing Extranet account holders will be prompted to update their Extranet account passwords to comply with the new requirements.
